Hello!
We are Shilstone Tor Class. We are the year 3 and 4 children. In our class there are currently 24 children.
Week Ending 24th October 2025
We finished off our run of forest school sessions this week with a challenging camp fire session. The weather was very much against us but we made the best of things and enjoyed some slightly soggy smores and slightly burnt popcorn while running in and out of the shelter to avoid the worst of the rain! Thank you to all parents who have provided forest school kits all term. We now change to a PE session on Mondays - Please make sure your child has a PE kit in school when we return after half term.
Week Ending 17th October 2025
Shilstone tor took over the hall during art this week and got rather messy! They have been learning about gestural art with charcoal and used the techniques they have learnt over the last few lessons to respond to a piece of orchestral music by Hans Zimmer. The outcomes were really interesting. The children were very focussed and their movements were thoughtfully in line with the style of the music and how it changed over the course of the piece. Apologies for the dusty socks!
Week Ending 10th October 2025
Shilstone Tor Class have been busy this week completing our final English lessons for this topic by writing our own versions of ‘Creature in the Cave’. The children enjoyed thinking about what odd ways a human could be described if viewed from the point of view of another animal. In maths we have moved onto our next sequence which is about addition and subtraction.
Week Ending 3rd October
This week Shilstone Class have been busy learning how to compare, order and round numbers in maths and in history we have learnt about the impact on Plymouth of the blitz. In forest school we made long bows and arrows out of hazel and wire and discovered it is definitely a skill to make a good bow that fires arrows in a straight line! The children showed great artistic flare in art. We learned how to work on a large scale using charcoal. They applied the mark making skills we learned last week to create depth, shape and pattern. The children enjoyed standing back at a distance to check their progress and decide what their work needed next. The buzz in the room was electric! So many incredible artists!
Week ending 26th September 2025
This week we have been learning to use our knowledge of place value to position numbers along a numberline. This involves understanding the value of each number, comparing them to other numbers, halving and dividing and reading and writing numbers. In art, the children engaged in some exploration of charcoal materials. They created a wide range of marks in their sketchbooks using willow charcoal, chalks, erasers and their hands. Apologies if there were some slightly grey t-shirts, I am confident it will wash out! Mrs Moss
Week ending 19th September 2025
Shilstone Class have been busy this week diving into their new maths unit which has been about reading, writing and building larger numbers with different manipulatives. We have also learnt how to use the place values to find out 1/10/100 more or less than a given number.
Week ending 12th September 2025
This week we have been securing some basic sentence skills when writing. The children have shown great editing skills along the way too! In Maths, we have begun our unit on place value; understanding the value of the digits in a 3 digit number and representing them in different ways. We kick started our art unit ‘Gestural art with charcoal’ by looking at the work of Laura McKendry and Edgar Degas. The children discussed their work in depth and created a double page spread to show their responses.
Week ending 5th September 2025
Welcome back to the parents and children of ‘Class 3’ now known as Shilstone Tor Class. We hope you have all had a restful summer holiday and are pleased to see the children have returned with energy and enthusiasm for the new school year ahead. We are the first class to have Forest School this year so please send in your child’s Forest School kit every Monday for this half term. Many thanks. Mrs EY
